Psych unit 9 Are humans completely helpless at birth? In the past, some philosophers and psychologist believed that humans are born as blank slates - helpless and without any skills or reflexes. In fact, they believed this lack of reflexes was one of the factors that separated humans from animals. Researchers now know that humans are far from blank slates when we are born. All babies exhibit a set of specific reflexes which specific, inborn, automatic response to certain specific stimuli. Laissez-fairre essays The principle of laissez faire is that the an unobtrusive government is the best government; that the government necessarily only 'maintain domestic tranquillity, defend the people from invasion, and protect them when travelling.' To leave economic workings of the country to the people and let the 'motives for production' be that of the people not the government. Our government took such a stance in its early decades, but as national debt rose, interstate commerce became indomitable, and the economy lost its strength, the need to patch the economy became very important. The government found that the needed patch was much more important than the laissez faire freedom previously given to monopolistic trusts, who were loosing favor with the majority of the lower class, who shared on 50% of the nation's wealth. As an attempt to end all that ailed the country the government began limiting land grants, instituting interstate commerce laws, and passing anti-trust bills, like The Sherman Ant i-Trust Bill. As the railroads became larger and more powerful, the need to give away land to million dollar companies became ludicrous to many citizens, especially in light of the declining economy. These changing feelings among the people (voters) moved congress to decide that 'no subsidy in money, bonds, public lands, indorsement, or by pledges of public credit' should be given to the railroad or any other private company, when it could be spent on the common good of the public, or kept as capital in the Public Treasury. The idea that no land need be given to the companies anymore was also supported by the growing feeling of being cheated by the railway through rebates, and other discriminations between large and small business. The decision to regulate interstate commerce grew mostly out of the rebate, and long-haul, short-haul discriminations of the railroads. La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats John Keats was born in London on October 31, 1795. He was the son of a stable attendant who married the owner's daughter and later inherited the stable for himself. The elder Mr. Keats died when John was eight, leaving the family tied up in legal matters that lasted the rest of John's life. He was fourteen when his mother died of tuberculosis, and fifteen when his guardian apprenticed him to an apothecary-surgeon. Soon after, John left the medical field to focus primarily on poetry. In July 1820, John left England for Italy. He had suffered a serious hemorrhage of the lungs, which he at once recognized as a symptom of tuberculosis. He was told by doctors that the warmer air of Italy would help cure him. John and his friend took up residence in a home next to the famed Spanish Steps in Rome. He died of tuberculosis on February 23, 1821, at the age of twenty-six. John Keats wrote several romances, including Endymion, and The Eve of St. Agnes. I constantly remind myself that serving them is such a noble profession. The cries and pains of the patients’ eyes that I see every time I visit a hospital really register on my mind and when I remember them, it pushes me to pursue my dream and that is to be a doctor.Moreover, whenever my mom and grandparents are sick, I am really the one, who attends to them and if there are chances to render services in the civic works, I also volunteer.The three people who brought impact to my life are my grandmother, my bestfriend and my mom. Among these three, it is my mom who really brought change and has really affected my life. Well, my grandmother encourages me to have difference in this world by serving people who are in need.
